The Blessing of Burial
This month I had the wonderful experience of sharing one of my soul earth places with my most special love~ It was Tom’s first time to Yosemite & it was a joy to see it through his eyes. Yosemite was as awe-inspiring as ever.
Part of the reason we went was to honor my dad and scatter his ashes and leave a page I prepared in the Yosemite Book of Memories in the chapel.
Driving into the Valley I was moved to tears at the grandeur of the familiar land forms there, especially thinking of 4 generations of my family visiting there over the years. My dad worked as a geologist in Yosemite for over 2 decades, and he loved this land with all his heart. So much so that he named me Tenaya after a beautiful lake in the high country.
Every time I visit Yosemite I’m blown away anew by the grandeur of this place~ The epic landforms rising impossibly high in sculptural majesty, to the indescribable sweet spiciness of the sun-warmed pine scent that perfumes the valley, to the colorful wildflowers blooming in the verdant meadows of the high country where it still feels like deep spring.
Everywhere we turned, such jaw-dropping beauty, and to see so many folks from all walks of life taking in the splendor of Yosemite after a year of staying at home warmed my soul in ways I didn’t know needed it.
On Sunday, Tom and I ventured to Tenaya Lake to leave my father’s ashes in a place he loved dearly. My dad passed away 6 years ago from Early-Onset Dementia at age 65 after a truly heartbreaking 7-year decline.
We made a simple ritual to offer his remains back to the earth. It was a sacred moment and I felt a sense of completion and fulfillment to honor my dad in this way. I was struck by how deeply human it felt to put my dad's ashes in the earth, the rightness of it. I’m left with a sense of lightness and grace knowing that he has been committed to Yosemite, to my namesake lake, to this land he held so dear. And to have my beloved Tom by my side holding me meant the world to me.

To my Marin & Sonoma County friends~ I recently found out about a fundraiser organized by the Coast Miwok of Marin to erect a statue honoring their ancestors, the original inhabitants of this area, who tended to and lived interwoven with this land we all love so deeply for thousands of years.
Once funded, the statue will stand in Marin County as a testament and visual reminder that this land we live on, hike on, and that we cherish, was cared for and belonged to the Coast Miwok people. I lovingly invite you to join me in donating to fund this important project. This is a tangible step we can all take as settlers on this land to give back. Every dollar helps! You can donate via the button below, and to learn more about the Coast Miwok people, visit: https://www.marinmiwok.com I also highly recommend the book The Ohlone Way, by Malcom Margolin, which paints a vivid depiction of life among the original inhabitants of the San Francisco Bay Area before settlers arrived.
Discover Your Earth Healing Archetype with Asia Suler
As I say goodbye this month, I'll leave you with a delightful quiz created by my dear teacher Asia Suler. If you take a few minutes to wind your way through the questions, you'll receive a strikingly accurate reflection on your deep being, your Earth Healing Archetype. I was astonished to find out I was an Old Growth Tree Person, as I've been feeling so in tune with the trees lately! After taking the quiz she'll send you access to a free audio class all about your archetype. Enjoy & I'd love to hear what your type is!
